Jonathan Ball Publishers are the leading publishers and distributors of general English books in South Africa. They specialise in South African history, politics, biography and literature. Jonathan Ball Publishers also act as agents for well-known overseas publishers, marketing and distributing books on their behalf.

Jonathan Ball Publishers were pioneers in political and history publishing with titles such as The Super-Afrikaners, which unmasked the Broederbond, and Thomas Pakenham's The Boer War. Recent successes include The Other Side of History by Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, The State of Africa by Martin Meredith, and Agaat by Marlene van Niekerk.

Jonathan Ball Publishers have scooped the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award a record seven times, including Scramble for Africa by Thomas Pakenham, Mandela by Anthony Sampson, and Midlands and The Number, both by Jonny Steinberg.

Among the many and varied titles distributed in South Africa by Jonathan Ball Publishers are the Harry Potter series, probably the biggest success story ever in the field of children's literature. They are also the sole distributors of JR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and CS Lewis' popular Chronicles of Narnia.

Recent success include the highly acclaimed Jodi Picoult novels and the hugely successful series of books from Robert Kiyosaki, most notably Rich Dad Poor Dad, of which Jonathan Ball Publishers have sold some 200 000 copies.

Launched in June 1976, the same year the Soweto uprising gave renewed impetus to the freedom movement, Jonathan Ball Publishers declared their intentions in a mission statement that promised to publish ‘books on South Africa and Afrikaners, books that entertain and inform, with an unfettered point of view that neither panders to the left nor the right, and which will not be beholden to the latest fashionable mindset'. To this day they strive to fulfill this purpose.
