At present we have 17 retail bookstores country-wide. There is also a well-equipped division that provides a direct ordering service to people who do not have access to a shop. The latest releases and top sellers are therefore just a phone call away. Lux Verbi Retail also has an active online shop at www.christene.co.za.
SERVICE TO CONGREGATIONS
Lux Verbi Retail is the congregation’s ally in acquiring church requirements and other congregational material. Anything that a congregation may need, can be ordered directly or bought at any Lux Verbi bookstore.
Lux Verbi Retail also uses a sales representative system whereby every congregation has a contact person from Lux Verbi Retail. In this way the ministers and members are aware of all the new products. The sales representative is actually a small bookshop within the congregation that makes it even easier to get hold of the latest Christian products.
SERVICE TO MINISTERS
Lux Verbi Retail is a useful aid to further the spiritual work of the minister within the congregation. All schooling material, church requirements, Bible study or other Christian products, can be acquired at Lux Verbi. If we do not have stock, we will try to get hold of it.
BACKGROUND
Lux Verbi Retail is the oldest and one of the biggest retail companies focusing exclusively on products for Christians. At Lux Verbi Retail we believe that Christians have an important role to play in this country. It is therefore important to produce products that can promote spiritual growth. There are 17 outlets country-wide that render services to all the Christian churches in their immediate surroundings.
Lux Verbi Retail is the only Christian retailer that has a direct marketing division. By using full colour catalogues, pamphlets and other postal marketing material, we reach Christians and congregations that do not have access to bookstores. People can order from their homes by calling toll-free 0860 231 231. We currently have about 55 000 addresses on our postal marketing list. HISTORY
The former South African Bible Society served only as distributor of imported Bibles and materials. In 1919 the NG-Kerk Publishers was established to print and distribute material for mainly reformed churches.
NG-Kerk Publishers expanded and became a full-fledged publisher. There were no outlets for Christian books (distribution was done by the churches and congregations) as the managers of secular bookshops thought it would be a financial risk to sell Christian books. Therefore the only option was to establish bookshops that could be managed and controlled by the publishing company itself. In the early part of the 1960’s a network of retail shops were created for these purposes.
Dr Willem van Zijl, the managing director of NG-Kerk Publishers from 1964, had the vision to expand the market beyond the reformed churches and the Afrikaans Christian book market, to include all Christian denominations. Because of this he established Lux Verbi in 1981 – an affiliation with the specific purpose to expand the market.
This Latin name means, freely translated, “Light of the Word”, or “Light on the Word” (Lux= “Light” and Verbi= “of the word”). “Word” here refers to the Bible or the Christian message.
This name became so popular that it was decided to change all the shops that were still known as NG-Kerk Publishers and Booksellers to Lux Verbi Christian Booksellers. Today Lux Verbi bookstores serve Christians of all denominations.
