What do we offer?

Availability and Service:
Van Schaik Bookstore has 49 branches countrywide, within reach of students at the main tertiary institutions in South Africa. These stores serve students as well as lecturers.

Service to lecturers:
The lecturer decides on a book that might be suitable as prescribed title for students. He or she supplies us with details such as the title, author, ISBN, quantity of books required and delivery date. Our task is to source and order the book in the most cost-effective manner. All aspects will be confirmed with the lecturer before finalising the order and we ensure that the book is available at the store.

Service to students:
The bookstore presents students with a self-help concept store, well-trained and experienced staff to assist and all their prescribed books. Our stores are based on or within walking distance from institutions. We have an account system that assists both parent and student with the book buying process during the year. During the year we give students the opportunity to buy books and win fabulous prizes during semester promotions and competitions.

Background

On 1 July 1914 Johannes Lambertus van Schaik opened a small bookstore specialising in Christian literature, magazines and stationery in Church Street, Pretoria. The following year the first book with the JL van Schaik imprint was published. This was the first of many: school textbooks in 1918, a small bilingual dictionary (Kritzinger & Steyn) in 1921, followed by its first North-Sotho publication, MJ Madiba's Tsiri in 1942.

At the end of the fifties more branches were opened in Sunnyside and Hatfield in Pretoria. Hans and Jan van Schaik sold the business to Via Afrika, the Naspers book division, in 1986.

Today Van Schaik Bookstore are South Africa's leading specialist providers of academic textbooks for the tertiary education market, providing books to more than 40 of the residential and distance-education universities, technikons, colleges and other tertiary institutions countrywide. These institutions are serviced by a network of 49 branches.

Van Schaik Bookstore also offers the medical profession a wide range of books and services in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Durban.
